Tondos

A Tondo is an artwork in a circle. They became popular in 15th century Florentine Art. For myself, I've recently been exploring the placement of artwork into basic sculptural forms to bring my prints away from the wall and purposely closer to the viewer. This circle shape came as a result of my interest in the idea of the Hamartia which is an archery term for missing the mark. In religious theology it refers to our sinful state as humans and how we have "missed the mark" of God's desired obedience. I wasn't interested in a realistic representation of a archery target but became to be intrigued with the idea of the circle shape. The idea with the tondo is that it causes the viewer's eye to travel around the image - a visual journey. I also like the idea of the circle as an ideal form that can represent eternity, no beginning - no end.
