The beginnings of these sculptural works are rooted in my increasing intrigue with the vessels and containers used in the distribution of the Eucharist. Christians believe that the Body and Blood of Christ are "truly and substantially present in, with and under the forms" of consecrated bread and wine (the elements), so that communicants eat and drink both the elements and the true Body and Blood of Christ himself. Although we cannot fix from Scripture the point within the sacramental usus (custom) when the real presence of Christ’s body and blood begins, His command and promise tells us it is so. In truth these mysteries are God’s invitation to keep pursuing Him, exploring our faith and to embrace the mystery.
I view these objects likewise as objects with unknown usages, raising more questions than answers – representing two principal sacraments of the Church – Baptism and Holy Communion, vessels associated with salvation or deliverance but perhaps even more as containers of a means of triumph. Visually I have aimed for prompts that hint at what can be perceived also as funerary art or reliquaries – possibly tied to ceremonies and rites expressing more complex religious ideas.
All of these pieces utilize a screen printed paper surface combined with reliable and proper materials (metal, wood and glass) in combination for a united composition and visual statement.
